Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about digital Waste Transfer Notes, UK Duty of Care compliance, and how WasteBolt can help your business.
General Questions
WasteBolt is the UK's dedicated platform for digital waste compliance, designed specifically for waste producers, carriers, brokers, and receivers. We streamline Duty of Care documentation by providing digital Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs), Season Tickets, and Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes. Our platform helps businesses meet their legal obligations under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and prepares you for the UK's mandatory Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) system launching in October 2026.
WasteBolt is built for anyone involved in the UK waste industry who needs to maintain Duty of Care compliance. This includes waste carriers, skip hire companies, recycling facilities, construction and demolition contractors, agricultural businesses, anaerobic digestion plants, waste brokers and dealers, local authorities, and any business that produces, transports, or receives waste. Whether you're a sole trader with a single vehicle or a large waste management company, WasteBolt scales to meet your needs.
WasteBolt helps you comply with key UK waste legislation including: the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (Duty of Care), the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011, the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005, the Waste Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2011, and the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012. Our templates are designed to meet Environment Agency (EA), Natural Resources Wales (NRW), SEPA, and NIEA requirements. We also prepare your business for the upcoming mandatory Digital Waste Tracking requirements.
Yes, absolutely. The UK Government's mandatory Digital Waste Tracking (DWT) system is set to launch in October 2026, requiring all waste movements to be recorded digitally. WasteBolt is being built from the ground up with DWT compatibility in mind. By switching to WasteBolt now, you'll already have digital records in place and a familiar workflow when DWT becomes mandatory. We'll provide seamless integration with the government's systems when they go live.
A Waste Transfer Note (WTN) is a legal document required for each individual transfer of non-hazardous waste between parties. A Season Ticket (also called a Duty of Care Waste Transfer Note for multiple transfers) covers regular, repeated transfers of the same type of waste between the same parties for up to 12 months. Season Tickets are ideal for businesses with ongoing waste collection arrangements, such as regular skip collections or routine trade waste pickups. Both are legally required under the Duty of Care regulations.
Features & Functionality
WasteBolt supports all essential UK waste compliance documents: Non-Hazardous Waste Transfer Notes (WTNs) for standard commercial, industrial, and household waste; Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes with full HP code support and POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) documentation; Season Tickets for regular waste transfers covering up to 12 months; and Dockets for individual loads under a Season Ticket. All documents are fully compliant with EA, NRW, SEPA, and NIEA requirements.
WasteBolt provides legally binding electronic signatures compliant with UK law (Electronic Communications Act 2000 and eIDAS Regulation). Each party (producer, carrier, and receiver) can sign digitally using their finger or stylus on any device. Signatures are timestamped and stored securely with a complete audit trail. You can send signature requests via email link, allowing customers and drivers to sign remotely without needing a WasteBolt account.
Yes, WasteBolt includes a comprehensive EWC (European Waste Catalogue) code database. You can search by code number, waste description, or keywords to find the correct 6-digit code for your waste stream. The system also flags hazardous waste codes (marked with an asterisk *) and provides guidance on common waste types. Your frequently used EWC codes are saved to your pick lists for quick access on future notes.
Yes, WasteBolt provides full support for hazardous waste documentation including: Hazardous Waste Consignment Notes with unique consignment codes, HP (Hazard Property) code selection covering all 15 hazard categories, POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) component tables with concentration tracking, special handling requirements documentation, and SIC code recording for waste producers. Our system ensures you capture all legally required information for hazardous waste movements.
Absolutely. Every WTN, Season Ticket, and Consignment Note can be instantly downloaded as a professional PDF document. PDFs include your company branding/logo, all required legal information, signatures, and QR codes for verification. You can also set up automatic PDF emails to all parties upon completion. These PDFs are audit-ready and accepted by all UK regulatory bodies.
WasteBolt includes comprehensive reporting tools to help you track your waste operations: waste movement summaries by date range, customer, or waste type; tonnage reports for weighbridge reconciliation; EWC code analysis showing your waste composition; carrier and receiver activity logs; and export functionality for EA/SEPA quarterly returns. Pro users get access to advanced analytics dashboards and custom report builders.

Mobile & Accessibility
Currently, WasteBolt is not available as a native app in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. However, WasteBolt is built with a mobile-first responsive design that works perfectly in your phone's browser. For the best experience, we recommend adding WasteBolt to your home screen as a shortcut – it will function just like a native app. On iPhone: tap Share > Add to Home Screen. On Android: tap the menu > Add to Home Screen or Install App.
WasteBolt requires an internet connection to save and sync your waste transfer notes. However, you can begin filling out a form and it will save locally until you regain connectivity. For sites with poor signal, we recommend completing notes in areas with reception or using mobile data. We're actively developing enhanced offline capabilities for future releases to support remote site operations.
WasteBolt works on any modern device with a web browser: desktop computers (Windows, Mac, Linux), laptops, tablets (iPad, Android tablets), and smartphones (iPhone, Android). We support all major browsers including Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. For the best experience, we recommend keeping your browser updated to the latest version. Our interface automatically adapts to your screen size.
Security & Data
WasteBolt takes data security seriously. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS 1.3) and at rest (AES-256). We use Supabase for secure cloud storage with automatic backups. Our infrastructure is hosted in secure data centres with ISO 27001 certification. We comply with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. Your waste records are stored for the legally required retention period (minimum 2 years for WTNs, 3 years for hazardous waste) and can be exported at any time.
WasteBolt stores your waste transfer notes securely for the entire duration of your subscription and beyond. UK law requires waste transfer notes to be kept for a minimum of 2 years, and hazardous waste consignment notes for 3 years. We retain your records indefinitely while your account is active, ensuring you always have access for regulatory audits. You can export all your data at any time in PDF or CSV format.
Your waste data is private and only accessible to authorised users on your account. The primary admin has full access to all records. Driver Seats can only see notes they've created or been assigned to. External parties (customers, carriers) can only access specific notes when you send them a signature link. WasteBolt staff do not access your data except for technical support when explicitly requested by you.
Compliance & Legal
Yes, waste transfer notes created with WasteBolt are fully legally valid and compliant with UK waste regulations. Our templates include all mandatory fields required by the Environmental Protection (Duty of Care) Regulations 1991. Electronic signatures captured through WasteBolt are legally binding under the Electronic Communications Act 2000. Our documents are accepted by the Environment Agency, Natural Resources Wales, SEPA, and NIEA for compliance purposes.
A legally compliant Waste Transfer Note must include: a description of the waste and its EWC code, the quantity of waste (weight or volume), the container type, details of the waste producer/holder (name, address, SIC code), details of the waste carrier (name, address, waste carrier registration number), details of the waste receiver (name, address, permit/exemption number), the date and time of transfer, both parties' signatures, and a declaration that the waste hierarchy has been applied. WasteBolt ensures all these fields are completed before a note can be finalised.
No, you are not legally required to keep paper copies if you have compliant digital records. The Environment Agency and other regulators accept electronic waste transfer notes provided they contain all required information and can be produced on request. WasteBolt allows you to instantly generate PDFs for printing if needed, but most businesses are moving to fully paperless operations. Digital records are actually preferred as they're easier to search, cannot be lost or damaged, and provide a clear audit trail.
WasteBolt makes EA audits straightforward. You can quickly search and filter your waste records by date, customer, EWC code, or carrier. Export your records as PDFs or CSV spreadsheets with a few clicks. All documents include timestamps, signatures, and a complete audit trail. Our reporting tools can generate summary reports showing waste types, quantities, and destinations – exactly what auditors typically request. Many customers report that audits are significantly faster and less stressful with WasteBolt.

Yes, WasteBolt supports data import to get you up and running quickly. You can manually add customers, sites, and waste types to your pick lists, or contact our support team for bulk CSV import assistance. Once your pick lists are set up, creating new WTNs becomes incredibly fast – just select from your saved entries rather than typing everything from scratch each time.

We're committed to making sure you get the most out of the platform.
